New Driver Onboarding: What to Expect
Starting any new role involves a learning curve. At Addison Lee, we’ve built our onboarding process around making that curve as short as possible.
From the moment you’re registered to your first job on the road, you’ll have the training, the tools and the support to feel confident from day one.
Here’s exactly what to expect when you join as a new driver.
Before You Start: What to Have Ready
Before your onboarding begins, you’ll need to have your documents in order. To become a private hire driver in London with Addison Lee, you’ll need:
- Your TfL PCO licence
- Your UK driving licence
- Proof of right to work in the UK
- Your vehicle documents: insurance certificate, MOT and V5C
- Bank details for payment setup
- Proof of address
If you’re using an Addison Lee vehicle rather than your own, you won’t need to worry about the vehicle documents. Your hire vehicle is arranged as part of the onboarding process, with the first eight weeks completely free for new drivers (subject to drivers meeting the required job targets).
Once everything is confirmed, your account is set up and you’re ready to begin.
Your First Day
Your first day starts with a full induction at one of our driver centres. This is where you’ll meet your driver support team and operations managers, get your vehicle handed over, and get set up on all the systems you’ll be using on the road.
The induction covers everything you need to know before your first job:
In-car tablet and booking system
You’ll get hands-on training with the technology you’ll use every day. By the end of the session, taking and completing jobs through the app will feel straightforward.
How jobs work
We’ll walk you through how jobs are dispatched, what’s expected on each journey and how to handle different job types, from airport runs to corporate pickups.
Practical tips for your first week
Our team shares the things that make the biggest difference early on: which hours generate the most work, how to position yourself for the best jobs and how to make the most of the Addison Lee network from the start.
Most drivers complete their first job within 24 hours of their induction.
Your First Week
The first week is about getting comfortable. You know the system, you have your vehicle, and live support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If anything comes up, whether it’s a question about a job, an issue on the road or a technical query, there’s always a real person at the other end of the line.
As driver Samantha puts it: “There’s a team, there are people on the phone you can speak to, and they know exactly where you are. I felt an immense sense of security knowing there are people there if you need them.”
A few things to focus on in your first week:
Learn the peak windows
Morning airport runs, corporate rush hours and Friday and Saturday evenings are where the highest-value jobs concentrate. Identifying these early and building your schedule around them makes a significant difference to your weekly earnings.
Get familiar with the areas you cover
The more comfortable you are across different parts of London, the more confident you’ll feel taking a wider range of jobs.
Track your earnings and costs from day one
Fuel, any rental costs and other expenses are worth recording from the start. Good habits early make managing your income much easier as you settle in.
Most new drivers see their earnings increase steadily through weeks two and three as their routine develops and their confidence builds.
Ongoing Support
Onboarding doesn’t stop after your first week. The Addison Lee driver support team is available around the clock for as long as you’re driving with us.
Operations provides daily support on jobs, and if there’s ever an issue with your vehicle, it’s repaired and returned as quickly as possible. If it can’t be fixed straight away, a replacement vehicle is provided immediately so you’re never off the road longer than necessary.
As Nathan, one of our experienced drivers, puts it: “You have someone to speak to at the other end of the line if you have any issues, queries, or just genuine questions. It’s a genuine person to give you advice and help you out with your options.”
Beyond day-to-day support, you’ll also have access to Addison Lee’s full driver benefits package: pension contributions, holiday pay, critical accident and sickness cover, no congestion or ULEZ charges, and rental credits to help with vehicle hire costs after your free period ends.
What Makes the Difference
Becoming a private hire driver in London for the first time can feel like a lot to take on. The licensing process, the new systems, learning the city’s rhythms. What makes Addison Lee’s onboarding different is that you’re not doing any of it alone.
The drivers who settle in quickest are the ones who lean on the support available, ask questions early and use their first week to build habits rather than just get through it. The structure is there. The team is there. The rest is yours to build.
