The UK-EU Trade Deal: What it Means for Courier Companies
The UK and EU’s latest post-Brexit trade deal, announced on 19 May 2025, marks a significant reset in bilateral relations. Several key updates to customs processes and import/export regulations are expected to impact how UK businesses send and receive goods across EU borders, these include:
- The introduction of a €2 handling fee on low-value parcels: The European Commission is introducing a €2 handling fee on low-value parcels entering the EU. While primarily aimed at e-commerce, this will also affect UK businesses that send small, frequent shipments. Parcels fulfilled within the EU will benefit from a reduced €0.50 fee.
- Removal of duty exemption for parcels under €150: Previously, parcels valued under €150 were exempt from customs duties. This exemption is being removed, which means duties and VAT will now apply to more goods, increasing overall shipping costs and admin for your teams.
- Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement: There is good news for those in food, drink or agricultural sectors. The new SPS agreement reduces routine checks on animal and plant products, which may help speed up shipments in these categories.
Many UK exporters are already grappling with inconsistent customs processing and limited clarity from HMRC. As requirements for documentation become more detailed and the risk of delays increases, having a clear understanding of customs procedures (and the ability to manage them effectively) will be more important than ever.
What You Can Do to Prepare
While exact implementation dates for these changes have yet to be confirmed, businesses would be wise to get ahead of the curve. Now is the time to review internal shipping processes and ensure teams are confident in handling the customs declarations, invoices, and product data required under evolving EU regulations. It is equally important to plan for potential cost increases, including the introduction of handling fees and the removal of duty exemptions, and reflect these in pricing and quoting strategies. Choosing a courier partner that offers more than just collection is critical, look for one that provides expert guidance on documentation, compliance, and delivery options. Finally, maintaining clear communication with EU-based partners will help manage expectations around possible delays or required paperwork, reducing friction and ensuring smoother cross-border operations.
Please note that this information is based on the latest guidance available and remains a work in progress. As further details are confirmed, we will continue to monitor developments and ensure our customers are kept fully informed.
